Geoff’s recent trip to South America
The phrase “Opportunity of a Lifetime” can be overused, but when the came up to head to South America, it was indeed just that.
We arrived into Santiago de Chile and spent 3 days exploring the local region including a tour of a the Vina Cousino Macul winery by pushbike.
Short bike rides, combined with wine tasting in amongst the actual vines made for a very interesting experience.
Then it was off to Valparaiso for a day by the sea with a walking tour of the old city highlighting the amazing street art.
Off the Punta Arenas to board the Ventus Australis for our fully inclusive 4 night 5 day cruise to Ushuaia. Truly amazing.
Every day bought new level of spectacular, from floating icebergs, to magnificent Glaciers.
Joining the shore excursions on Zodiac was an adventure in itself. The excursions on land, varied from a pleasant stroll up some full on trekking for the more adventurous.
Culminating with a visit to Cape Horn, going ashore to visit he monument which is a large sculpture featuring the silhouette of an Albatross in honour of the sailors who died while attempting to ’round the Horn’.
On leaving the ship in Ushuaia, we headed up to Buenos Aires, a most spectacular city.
A mix of modern and historical architecture makes this city a must to explore.
From the extremes of the 9th July Avenue with Its 7 lanes of traffic in each direction, to cobblestoned alleyways, full of interesting cafes and shopping.
Here is THE place for Tango, weather watching a performance while enjoying your included meal and wine, or sitting in one of the outdoor cafes and bars in the many plaza’s that abound in the city.
Sadly after 12 days of incredible scenery, temperatures below freezing at Cape Horn, to warm days in Buenos Aires, it was time to leave South America behind, whilst keeping the memories which will linger forever.
