Waterfalls, Wine & Wonders – Argentina Beyond Buenos Aires

When our clients plan an Antarctic expedition, their first stop is almost always Buenos Aires - and for good reason. This vibrant, European-style capital is full of rich culture, tango rhythms, and delicious cuisine. But the question I’m often asked is: “What else should we see in Argentina while we’re there?”

It’s a great question - and an exciting one. Because Argentina is vast, diverse, and absolutely packed with once-in-a-lifetime experiences. And while there are countless options, two regions in particular stand out as my personal favourites: Mendoza and Iguazu Falls.

Whether you're sipping your way through world-class wineries or standing in awe of the planet’s most powerful waterfall system, these destinations offer a perfect contrast to the icy, remote landscapes of Antarctica - and a beautiful extension to your South American adventure.

Mendoza: Wine, Mountains, and a Taste of Argentine Soul

Tucked beneath the snow-capped peaks of the Andes, Mendoza is the beating heart of Argentina’s wine country. It's a place where indulgence meets adventure, and the simple pleasures of life — a good meal, a glass of wine, a mountain view — are elevated to unforgettable experiences.

As a wine lover, Mendoza truly stole my heart. With more than 1,200 wineries, this region is synonymous with Malbec, but on my last visit, I was delighted to discover a hidden gem: Cabernet Franc. This grape is lesser-known internationally, but it’s gaining serious traction here for good reason. The high-altitude vineyards and climate in Mendoza create the perfect growing conditions, resulting in wines that are fragrant, light, and beautifully complex.

One afternoon, I joined a cycling wine tour (yes, cycling — and yes, I recommend starting at the top of the route for an easy downhill glide!). Cruising between bodegas, we stopped to taste and chat with passionate local winemakers who pour their heart and soul into every bottle. Each tasting was accompanied by jaw-dropping views and, of course, a generous side of asado — Argentina’s famous barbecue. Juicy cuts of beef grilled over open flames, seasoned with nothing but salt and tradition, paired perfectly with a smooth glass of Cabernet Franc.

But Mendoza isn’t just about wine. The surrounding Andes offer an adventurer’s playground. From ziplining across the Mendoza River to hiking the foothills of Aconcagua — the highest peak in the Western Hemisphere — there’s no shortage of ways to get your heart racing. I opted for the zipline, which spans a thrilling 450 metres across the river. The views? Unreal. The adrenaline? Even better.

After all that excitement, the town of Mendoza itself is a lovely place to unwind. I spent one morning at a local cooking class, learning to make empanadas and chimichurri from a warm-hearted host who welcomed us like family. In the evenings, I wandered the city’s tree-lined streets, stopping at local markets, charming cafés, and lively plazas where street performers entertained crowds well into the night.

Mendoza is a true celebration of Argentina’s flavours, landscapes, and laid-back lifestyle. It’s a must for foodies, wine connoisseurs, and anyone who wants to experience Argentine hospitality in its most authentic form.

Iguazu Falls: Nature’s Grandest Stage

From the peaceful vineyards of Mendoza, we journey to the untamed north — to the world’s largest waterfall system, the legendary Iguazu Falls.

Straddling the border between Argentina and Brazil, Iguazu is not just a waterfall — it’s a sensory explosion. Picture 275 separate waterfalls thundering across a span of nearly 2.7 kilometres, taller than Niagara and wider than Victoria Falls. The sheer scale is humbling.

On the Argentinian side, I spent the day walking along raised platforms that brought me close enough to feel the mist on my face and hear the thunder of water echoing through the jungle. The climax of this side is the Devil’s Throat — a U-shaped chasm where water crashes down with breathtaking power. If you’re up for it, you can even board a jet boat tour that takes you straight into the spray — prepare to get soaked and thrilled in equal measure!

Over on the Brazilian side, the view opens up. Here you’ll get a full panoramic perspective of the falls — a perfect opportunity for those iconic travel photos. I highly recommend taking a helicopter ride for a bird’s-eye view. It’s one of those surreal travel moments that stays with you long after you land.

Speaking of birds, don’t leave Brazil without visiting the Parque das Aves (Bird Park), located near the falls. It’s a sanctuary for rescued birds — many victims of animal trafficking — and the sprawling, jungle-like aviaries give them the space and freedom they deserve. Parrots, toucans, flamingos — the colour and personality of each resident added a new layer of wonder to the trip.

As Eleanor Roosevelt famously said when she first laid eyes on Iguazu Falls: “Poor Niagara!” And she wasn’t wrong.

Your Argentine Adventure, Tailored Your Way

What I love most about these two destinations is how beautifully they balance each other — and how seamlessly they can fit into a wider Antarctic or South American itinerary. Mendoza offers indulgence, tranquillity, and culture, while Iguazu promises raw power, tropical energy, and awe-inspiring natural beauty.

These experiences are not just add-ons — they’re destinations in their own right, and they turn a trip into a true journey.

So whether you’re winding down from an Antarctic voyage, or building an adventure that spans continents, I’d love to help craft your perfect Argentine escape. From luxury lodges and private wine tastings to guided rainforest hikes and helicopter flights, we can tailor every moment to suit your travel style.
